CalPERS Retirement
CalPERS, the California Public Employees’ Retirement System, provides retirement and health benefits to more than 1.6 million public employees, retirees, and their families from more than 2,500 employers. It is one of the largest organizations of its kind in the world, and provided almost $11 billion in retirement benefits in FY 2007-2008. Health care payments will be over $5 billion in 2009. CalPers got its name in 1992, although the organization dates back to 1992.
CalPERS is famous for its investor activism. The so-called “CalPERS Effect” pertains to stocks on its Focus List, which tend to do better than other stocks.
